Emoji thumbs up5/16/2023 ![]() ![]() How many successful advertising campaigns have you come across which have been fully loaded with text? Which PowerPoint presentation would you rather sit through, one that is text heavy or one with text and pictures? Is there an element of emojis helping to make our messages and social media posts more aesthetically pleasing? Looking again at the list of frequently used emojis – none of them are negative. Could it be more about wanting to emphasize a particular aspect of a written message? ![]() If the intended meaning of emojis can be lost in translation, why do they continue to be popular? Thinking back to our good old school days, it wasn’t uncommon for a teacher to draw a smiley face alongside positive feedback. So pinning our hopes on the use of emojis to express ourselves in short written communications and for people to consistently reach the same conclusion could be a stretch! Isn’t this the same as trying to interpret other peoples’ thoughts and feelings during face-to-face situations? There are many occasions when emotions are misinterpreted even when you’re in the same room as the person you’re speaking to. However, there was less agreement for emojis depicting disgust and fear. (2019) discovered that the use of emojis to convey anger, surprise, joy and sadness were generally understood in the way intended. Or are we kidding ourselves by thinking the use of emojis in our written communication provides a more nuanced message? We could be! A pilot study by Brants et al. Time for some self-reflection… if you use emojis, what’s your motivation? Do you think emojis help to convey feelings to reflect your mood? Does it makes it quicker for you to get your message across? Do you think they help you to come across as a friendlier person? If you’re asking for a favour, a smiley face at the end of the message helps, right? ![]() In our fast-paced world, do emojis help satisfy our need for speed? Perhaps there’s a feeling of emoji efficiency? For example, a simple thumbs up is a fast and efficient way of communicating that a message has been received and understood. Perhaps this is unsurprising – as smiley and gesture emojis can help us convey non-verbal communication cues in the context of written messages. According to Emojipedia, 6 of the 9 most frequently used emojis (at the time of writing) were smileys or gestures rather than food and drink, animals, or transport. Today, 17th July, is World Emoji Day! Who knew?! There’s a myriad of awareness days but is World Emoji Day one you will celebrate or one you are quite happy to overlook? Do emojis make you smile and do you value them as a communication tool? Or do they leave you with a sad face and find them a source of confusion? In our current situation with less face-to-face interaction – do emojis help us convey emotion, tone and feeling in this virtual world?Įmojis appear to be ubiquitous across social media and messaging apps. ![]()

Samorost 3 video game5/16/2023 ![]() Some of these noises are mad burbling fun, but others are little tunes that Gnome can play back (thankfully automatically – despite the hefty musical focus, there’s no core puzzle that requires playing back tunes) on the horn, causing animated thought bubbles to appear giving you hints about what you need to do, or initiating events in the scene. When he picks it up he discovers that it can be used to listen to specific objects and animals. Each scene is alive with detail, hidden extras to discover, and esoteric puzzles to solve by interacting with everything you can find.Īt the start, a horn descends from the sky outside our friend’s house. But the real magic happens when you meet the game’s animals, flora and strange bearded denizens, who are the most astonishingly wonderfully animated creatures. ![]() They're textured and detailed in a way that makes them less awkwardly different from the world. However, this time out the main character, his dog, and a few other peculiar creatures, are more carefully designed. It is without question one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever seen, maintaining that collage look of machinery and nature, photography (I think) and wonderfully rendered artwork, with cartoon characters within. By Samorost 2, things lasted closer to half an hour, and the art, animation and music had improved by considerable degrees (although the closing puzzle was a disaster). Samorost 1 is a ten minute web game that introduced the main character, a little chap in a white onesy and dangly bobble hat – apparently only ever known as “Gnome” - who lives on a small organic/metallic island floating in space. But it’s also the hardest game they’ve made so far, and I’m not sure that’s always for the best. Phenomenally beautiful, exquisitely animated, and constantly delightful and joyous, this is a lovely thing. Samorost is where it all began for Amanita Design, and this return to the series, following their huge raise in reputation and awareness with Machinarium and Botanicula, is a stunning labour of love. How does the adventure/puzzle game hold up at this scale? Here's wot I think: Samorost 3 is a full-length, full-screen adventure that requires no prior knowledge. Don't worry if you've never heard of the first two - they were both tiny Flash games. From the team most famous for Machinarium, Aminita Design, comes the third game in the Samorost series. ![]()

Improving access to COVID-19 information and care These gentle reminders made the overall patient experience less stressful and increased the likelihood of follow-through. Healthcare chatbots are improving patient experience, outcomes and revenue. A basic chatbot can direct users to information within your website, like location addresses and business hours. Spectators were not free to walk anywhere they wanted, but were carefully funneled throughout the structure based on their social status. This segregation was so complete that the corridor systems made it impossible for Senators and Equestrians to run into each other, and it was possible for plebs only to meet other plebs. 8 The vaulting within the arena was crucial not only for the structural integrity of the building, but also to provide easy access and free circulation for spectators. 7 Spectators were seated based upon their social status, with the most elite viewers closest to the arena, and the lower class citizens higher up. Contemporary estimates claimed the Colosseum could seat up to 87,000 people, 6 though modern, more conservative estimates put that number closer to 50,000 people. Booked kwame alexander5/16/2023 ![]() ![]() In many ways, Booked takes on a pedagogical or didactic function in that it introduces readers to contemporary works for young readers and schools them in vocabulary. He describes the experience of reading works like Karen Hesse's verse novel Out of the Dust and Jacqueline Woodson's Peace, Locomotion. Towards the end of the verse novel, Nick begins to become immersed in literature for younger readers and joins a book club. The Poetry: One of the most unique and fascinating things about Alexander's Booked is his use of erasure poetry, footnotes, acrostics, and intertextuality throughout. Nick struggles with his parents' separation throughout the novel, while also building up the courage to talk to April, playing against his best friend in soccer tournaments, dealing with being bullied, and resisting his honors English teacher's and his librarian's pleas for him to get more involved in reading because of his strength with words. After learning this news, Nick becomes depressed he has a hard time sleeping and begins to struggle in his classes. Early on in the narrative, Nick learns that his mother has decided to go back to work with horses in Kentucky and that his parents are separating (57). As the narrative continues, the reader learns that in addition to playing soccer, Nick takes regular lessons at Miss Quattlebaum's School of Ballroom Dance and Etiquette (21), where he often gets to dance with April (the girl he has a crush on but is mostly too nervous to talk to). The narrative begins with Nick daydreaming about soccer and feeling annoyed that his father makes him read a dictionary he wrote called Weird and Wonderful Words in preparation for college. ![]() Alexander's verse novels have both portrayed highly professionalized parents in The Crossover Josh's parents were a retired professional basketball player and an assistant middle school principal, and in Booked Nick's parents are a linguistics professor and a former horse racer turned trainer. The Plot: Kwame Alexander's Booked follows eighth grader Nick Hall- a wordsmith and avid soccer player- as he navigates his first crush, his parents' separation, and his relationship with books. Alexander's follow up to The Crossover, Booked (2016) is another groundbreaking verse novel that is sure to garner praise from young readers, librarians, educators, and scholars. I highly recommend The Crossover, which incorporates some truly electric language and utilizes a variety of different formal approaches to tell a rich story that deals with family, grief, sports, and boyhood in an absolutely innovative way. Earlier this year I reviewed Kwame Alexander's Newbery Medal winner The Crossover (2014). ![]()
